Hot bearings to go!

Oh that is what that noise was! The little round tubes are roller bearings that are supposed to roll around in a bunch of grease as the car moves. This Explorer was driven home from Perry GA on I-95. The lucky driver made it without incident, but the bearings got so hot that they are welded to the race, which turned blue and welded to the spindle.
Obviously a simpler repair if caught on time.
