Ball Joint Failure in Maitland

At the risk of being accused of using scare tactics to sell repairs; check out these photos. This happened when a ball joint failed. A penny wise and a pound foolish. The $200 ball joint replacement became a $1500 front end rebuild. Not to mention that someone might have died when the wheel fell off.

Worn out tires DANGER!

When you walk by this car the tires look fine, but on a closer look, the inner edge is worn so severely that the steel belt is exposed. This is what a tire looks like just before the tread comes off and tears up the fender. This can make for some ugly damage to your car, not to mention the risk of causing a crash.

Car falls apart when lifted

I really get upset when people in our industry try to make their shop look good by bashing the defenseless last shop who worked on your car. As a matter of policy I greatly discourage it. None-the-less, this case is irresistable. This explorer had a bunch of front end parts installed by some other shop. They did all the easy stuff and passed over the hard work, changing the ball joints. Trouble is, usually the ball joints are the greatest safety concern. In this case when we lifted the car the upper ball joint fell out of the spindle. Can you image what might have happened if this had fallen apart out on the road?

This 68 Impala came in for a coolant leak from the freeze plugs. Engine removed for reseal and cleanup.

Timing belt service due at 60k

This 97 Camry is overdue for timing belt service at 103,000 miles. Oil leaks from cam seals and a leaky water pump saturated the timing belt. To prevent this we recommend timing belt service, including water pump and cam seals on most cars at 60,000 miles. Many cars with timing belts will incur major engine damage if the belt fails.

Hot bearings to go!

Oh that is what that noise was! The little round tubes are roller bearings that are supposed to roll around in a bunch of grease as the car moves. This Explorer was driven home from Perry GA on I-95. The lucky driver made it without incident, but the bearings got so hot that they are welded to the race, which turned blue and welded to the spindle.
Obviously a simpler repair if caught on time.

There is a lot of labor involved in many a/c repairs. In this photo we are replacing the evaporator on a 98 Chrysler Sebring. The steering column and dash have to be removed to access the evaporator box.

Intake manifold leak, GM V6

General Motors V6 with intake manifold removed shows dramatic evidence of gasket leaks, a very common problem in these engines. Using plastic, aluminum and steel in major engine components leads to gasket problems, since the materials respond differently to heat and vibration. The dark liquid on top of the motor should not be there. It is mostly transmission fluid that entered the intake through a leaky transmission modulator, then leaked into this area by way of a cracked plastic upper intake manifold.

This Lexus ES300 came in with the drain plug held in by silicone. To do this oil change we will have to replace the oil pan and drain plug.

2003 BMW X5

This is the oil filter element from a BMW that went way too long between oil changes. The sludge on the filter is restricting oil flow, starving the engine of lubrication. We had to puncture the layer of sludge in the oil pan with a screwdriver to allow the engine oil to drain.

Oil pan is dry but sway bar shows evidence of an oil leak coming from under the timing cover. Since it has been 44K miles and 3 years since the last timing belt service, along with a timing belt we recommend balance shaft belt, balance shaft seal, crank seal, cam seals, water pump, timing belt pulleys and tensioner. It is a 4 hour job to dissassble and inspect the front of the engine. There may be oil leaks at the oil pump requiring replacement or reseal.

Light color in center is adhesive chemical of unknown origin apparently used to repair a break, crack or leak in the engine block. Repair is holding, no leak observed.

It is a 1958 Century Resorter. This photo was taken at Cayo Costa State Park, January 2006. The boat is restored to same as original including a 312ci Dearborn Intercepter V8 that pushes it to 45mph!
